DATELINE September 26. 2016

BOARDWALKS SECRET CITY DEAL. If you or I or anybody has a business in the City of Santa Cruz the law, regulations and permits all say you will have your garbage hauled by the City…you can’t save money and do it yourself (for obvious reasons). Health, safety and the environment being obvious. What I just found out is that this present City Council and all the rest going back years, have allowed the Seaside Corporation/Boardwalk to haul their own trash & garbage. Who’s going to check into that and find out when it first started, and help end this one more shameless fortune that our Santa Cruz City Council’s gives to that Canfield empire?

UCSC DUMP??? How is it that so few of us know about the private dump/recycling center that UCSC has built (and is still building) on their campus? How come that’s allowed? Why haven’t  more living-on-campus families and students complained about the odors? Maybe because it’s so close to the Arboretum?

UNCENSORED RICHARD NIXON.
THE HOLLARS MOVIE. Good fun, go see it ASAP.

MAH & PAID MEMBERSHIPS?? I keep hearing from many of those people who go to The Museum of Art & History that “it just doesn’t look or feel like an Art or History museum anymore”. There hasn’t been an art curator for quite some time, and as I’ve said many times Nina should just change the name to The McPherson Community Center…no problem. People also ask now that Nina has brought up the attendance numbers with her numb, super pop events what’s happened to the actual membership numbers? Up or down? One friend said he counted 13 local restaurants near MAH. So San Josean John McEnery IV is bringing all those new out of town restaurants here to compete…not fair. Many are betting that Nina Simon, now on her second book tour, will search and get a better job offering and leave town anyways. We’ll wait here.

JOHN LEOPOLD, CYNTHIA MATHEWS, PAUL ELERICK & MEASURE D!! Over and over again the No on D forces ask a simple question, “Where has widening highways ever worked ? “And of course the answer is NOWHERE. Now we see that County Supervisor John Leopold is very active in the YES on D, and Corridor development and it follows that he is also endorsing Cynthia Mathews for City Council. In addition Paul Elerick who has been  writing for BrattonOnline many, many years called me today (Monday) and said he’s not writing for us anymore because I am against Measure D. We’ll miss Paul. He quit Campaign For Sensible Transportation for the same reason.

Stephen Slade Exec. Director of The Land Trust of Santa Cruz County sent me this….” The Land Trust’s endorsement of Measure D and hiring a part-time staff are NOT connected. The staff position is a stewardship job — taking care of Antonelli Pond, Byrne-Milliron Forest and other properties. Measure D, for us, is about building the rail trail and wildlife tunnel”.

Check out Measure D on the website at http://sensibletransportation.org/congestion if you want to get some facts in this important issue as we get closer to the November voting date. More facts will be presented at the Community forum on Measure D, hosted by Santa Cruz Sierra Club Group on Thursday, September 29, 6:30pm – 8:30pm at the Resource Center For Nonviolence, 612 Ocean St, Santa Cruz, CA 95060, USA (map) Get educated on this complex measure before you vote. Come hear arguments for and against Measure D, which Santa Cruz County voters will face on the November ballot. There will also be time to ask questions at the end. This 30-year tax measure will have major implications for the shape of transportation facilities in Santa Cruz County. This proposed transportation sales tax measure was created by the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission and put on the ballot by the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors. To help the community navigate the pros and cons of this measure, Santa Cruz Sierra Club Group are hosting a community forum with four panelists who will share their arguments for and against this measure. After hearing all sides, we will move into the question and answer portion of the evening. Thursday, September 29, 2016 7:00 – 8:30 PM Resource Center for Nonviolence 612 Ocean Street, Santa Cruz, CA Map and Directions.

HISTORICAL PHOTO RESPONSE. Many thanks for the response to any/all the historical photos I post every week. Gillian Greensite was first to remind me, and all new arrivals, that the Municipal wharf runs North and South. So that makes the Ideal Restaurant’s location in the photo on the West side of the wharf. Peter Nurkse checked in to say “Yep, Darling House is there, out in the sun, and the larger Epworth House, older than the Darling House, is there too on the same block, behind the Darling House in the shade of the trees.

As a reference for history in the area, you could use George Lawrence’s 1906 aerial panorama. There is a visible jog in the panorama at this point, but that’s just where the Library of Congress cut up the original print to make it fit in their filing cabinets.

The original Cowell lime warehouse, next to the hospital, seems to be in tip top condition, even if almost a century old. Somebody must have been maintaining it, since it wasn’t in use any more. That may have been Samuel Henry Cowell, who died that same year, 1955. He would have remembered the warehouse in constant use, rolling cargos down to the Cowell wharf (which collapsed itself in 1907).  And Samuel Henry certainly had enough resources to keep the warehouse in perfect condition, even if just for sentimental reasons.

The warehouse would have been a great historical structure. Like the Hay Barn at UCSC, but on a more spectacular site, right at the ocean. However Samuel Henry was presumably the last person to care for it and to be able to maintain it, so probably soon after he died it was demolished. If there had been a historical preservation movement in Santa Cruz at the time they might have protested, but that came later”.

Carey Casey also had a lot of things to add to that great photo she says,Notice the old warehouse at the bottom of Bay Street. It was originally built in the late 1860s by the Davis & Jordan Lime and Cement Company, still standing (surprisingly) in this photo. The lime company also built Bay Street, originally called  Lime Kiln Road. The big barn is shown, when it was new, in an 1870 “bird’s eye view” panorama painting. As one of a number of speakers, I’ll be presenting a slide show (available online) on the painting at the upcoming Santa Cruz County History Fair (October 8 at Louden Nelson Center). Should be fun! – Carey Casey. She must have meant LONDON Nelson !!!

LED LESSONS

Santa Cruz has a reputation for being a leader in environmental awareness and activism. That is true for some issues but for others, we trail far behind. A good example is the relatively recent conversion to LED street lighting. Most of us are aware of the bright white Light Emitting Diodes (LED’s) that have replaced the old sodium vapor streetlights throughout the county. Few would not support this change when it comes to energy savings and light longevity. But as with most technology, there are choices and not all are desirable.

The recent American Medical Association’s warnings about high intensity LED streetlights have reached the daily news. We now have broad community awareness of the detrimental health and environmental effects of the blue-white high intensity LED’s that have been recently installed by the city and county of Santa Cruz but rejected by a number of other communities such as Davis and Oceanside in California, eight counties in Arizona and the town of Lake Worth in Florida. Given the AMA warnings it is likely that other communities will follow their lead.

“MAKE THEM VOTE FOR WAR” (Wednesday September 21, 2016)

“Once I started digging into my “read it later” pile, I found lots of older material, like an editorial from the May 10, 2016 edition of The New York Times, entitled, “A Soldier’s Challenge to the President.” Regrettably, this editorial is still relevant. The 1973 War Powers Resolution, passed by Congress over the veto of then-president Nixon, requires the president to obtain “specific statutory authorization” whenever he sends United States troops into war. Guess what? Our president doesn’t do that. So far, the courts have not dealt with the president’s refusal to ask permission. And, as The Times editorial says, Congress is not actually trying to get the president to make the request that the law requires.

In mid-August, the president launched airstrikes on targets in Libya. Apparently, U.S. ground troops are also taking action in Libya. There have certainly been recent U.S. air strikes in Syria. Just this week, in fact, such U.S. air strikes have apparently led to the termination of a cease fire that had been negotiated. With respect to Libya, an online CNN news report said that “Libya asked the U.S. to help fight ISIS with airstrikes.” Great! Glad you asked, Libya, but according to our laws, you can’t just ask the president, you need to have the elected representatives in Congress sign off on such military adventures.

Probably, the majority of the Congress supports what President Obama is doing but I think it is a lot less certain that the people of the United States are of the same opinion. As members of the U.S. military go off to kill and be killed, in our name, let’s demand that Congress do its job. Let’s make them vote for all these wars!”

LISA JENSEN LINKS. Lisa writes: “An unquiet spirit from Jewish folklore scares up plenty of menace in the eerie, complex Polish horror movie, Demon, this week at Lisa Jensen Online Express (http://ljo-express.blogspot.com). And, don’t look now, but it’s time for Open Studios again — Santa Cruz’s biggest art event of the year!” Lisa has been writing film reviews and columns for Good Times since 1975.

THE HOLLARS. One of the most cleverly written comedies I’ve seen in years. Full of familiar faces, the cast is as funny as the script. New York City family relationships, a bit slow at times, no groundbreaking plot, but funny. It never seems to go where you think it will, and that’s great too. Go for it. Mary Kay Place, Anna Kendrick, Richard Jenkins, and especially Margot Martindale all star in it.

DEMON. A Jewish wedding in Poland has a dybbuk as a haunting and unwanted guest. Scary, tense, then boring, then tense again…and it has a 95 on Rotten Tomatoes!!! If you’re trying to stay away from Vodka do not see this film. Subtitled and in Polish, Yiddish, and many mumbled lines too.

MAGNIFICENT SEVEN 3. This movie should be sued for using the same title as the earlier classics starring in 1960 Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Colburn, Robert Vaughn and of course Eli Wallich. Then there’s the genuine Akira Kurosawa classic

“Seven Samurai” from 1956 (which both of above films ripped off), that starred Toshiro Mifune. The new one has Denzel Washington as the big honcho and he’s about as impressive a leader as Pee Wee Herman would be, but he’s not as funny. Don’t go.

BRIDGET JONES’S BABY. Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth and Patrick Dempsey head the list for this miserable, boring, semi-dirty part 3 of B. Jones/Zellweger baby films. Zellweger was born in Texas but for some reason she plays a Brit in this series. She gets pregnant by one of the two above mentioned guys. For the sake of making a movie plot she doesn’t get a test to see which one is the Dad. Besides that, you wouldn’t care anyways even IF you do go. Jokes are lame and obvious, you won’t laugh and the worst part of the entire film is that at the end they show a newspaper photo of Hugh Grant saying he’s alive. He was the co-star before Colin Firth…so that means part 4 is coming at us soon. Duck.

THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS. Critics and most folks are calling this a romantic melodrama, I say that’s cheapening it. And gives it the wrong image  I call it a contemporary Greek Tradegy. Those classic tradegies were meant to stir your emotions, cause you to think about your deepest values, to help us learn about love, sacrifice, and morals. Wikipedia says, “Tragedy (from the Greek: tragoidia[a]) is a form of drama based on human suffering that invokes an accompanying catharsis or pleasure in audiences”. This film does all of that and more. We aren’t used to “deep” films like this anymore so we dilute them and call them weepers or melodramas. Stunning actors like Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Rachel Weisz bring this highly emotional film into near legendary status. It’s from a book  about a lighthouse keeper and his wife who can’t have children and find a baby. Please see it, if you like serious films.

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC.Viggo Mortensen, the lead in this family saga, has never been better, and he’s almost always excellent. The older you are the more you’ll appreciate this extension of our 1950 & 60’s belief system. A film that has Noam Chomsky’s philosophy as a driver, Jesse Jackson, Joy of Sex book, Lolita, Glen Gould’s Bach Variations and some non-christian beliefs added,  has to take you back just a bit. And in a good way. Viggo raises his family in the total wilds and later they have to face modern life and society. It’s as much fun as it is moving, sensitive, and well made. Frank Langella and Steve Zahn add to this hit film. Go for/to it!!

SNOWDEN. A genuine Oliver Stone film. If you think you know everything about the Edward Snowden Wikileaks international extravaganza you’ll learn even more watching this film.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, and even a tubby Nicolas Cage in a bit part make this into a tight thriller . We don’t know the ending yet, and won’t until Snowden leaves Russia or Obama changes his ethics and morals and guarantees this true patriot some semblence of freedom. I think Edward Snowden should be given medals, trophys, and a place in our national security system.

IXCANUL. Filmed in Guatemala, with all non-actors, a serious drama about a 17 year old local coffee farm daughter and the desperate way she tries to leave her peasant life. She gets pregnant, her baby is probably sold by the hospital to someone and the story is slow and confusing. With beautiful photography. It’s like a National Geographic saga. Nope, I have no idea how to pronounce the title and everybody in the film speaks either Spanish or native Mayan or Kaqchikel, as we call it.

SULLY. Tom Hanks, Laura Linney and Aaron Eckhardt do their dependable, professional jobs in this formulac Hollywood treu life drama. Plenty of tension, a great true story that we knew most of already. It’s how airplane Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger landed that passenger plane in the Hudson river and saved everybody’s lives. Speaking of airplanes, you might think about right wing director of the film Clint Eastwood and that  the executive producer of Suicide Squad and Sully is  Steven Mnuchin who is Donald Trump’s finance director, if  it matters who you give money to!

LITTLE MEN. NOT  a sequel to Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women”. That movie was last done in a 1940 version with Sterling Holloway and Kay Francis. This is a “New York City” movie about two 13 year old boys, their problems with their families, their schooling, and how they grew. It lacks a statement, point of view, or some big reason to go see it.

HELL OR HIGH WATER. Jeff Bridges, Ben Foster and Chris Pine make this one wonderful, exciting, involving, and well acted film. Go see it ASAP. Cops and bank robbers in Texas, internal conflicts, evil bank laws and practices, and ethics and morals are all integrated. It’s hard t o believe that “Hollywood” could still make a film this good after all these years of junk.

CAFÉ SOCIETY.Woody Allen’s newest starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Parker Posey and Steve Carell. Woody narates the film and he’s older and his voice has lost that whiney, confused, contradictory warble that we’ve grown to love so much. This film doesn’t rank in his top 4 or 5 films. The story is original, the acting is perfunctory, Kristen Stewart is above reproach, but it’s no Midnight in Paris, Annie Hall, Blue Jasmine, Hannah and Her Sisters or Purple Rose of Cairo.

DON’T THINK TWICE. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 99 % I give it about 4!!! I’ve always hated Improv Comedy, that’s why. This movie is totally about Improv Comedy and the internal combustion within a group calling them selves the Commune. I can’t tell you how many times I watched San Francisco’s The Committee throughout most of the 1960’s. A lot of the Nickelodeon audience laughed a lot when I watched it…go warned.

QUOTES:    “OCTOBER”

“I detest ‘Jingle Bells,’ ‘White Christmas,’ ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,’ and the obscene spending bonanza that nowadays seems to occupy not just December, but November and much of October, too”, Richard Dawkins
“All things on earth point home in old October; sailors to sea, travellers to walls and fences, hunters to field and hollow and the long voice of the hounds, the lover to the love he has forsaken”,  Thomas Wolfe
“On October 15, 1965, an estimated 70,000 people took part in large-scale anti-war demonstrations”,  Noam Chomsky
“And so by the fifteenth century, on October 8, the Europeans were looking for a new place to try to get to, and they came up with a new concept: the West”,  Dave Barry

DATELINE September 19, 2016

CAMBRIA REPORT ON COTONI. Ted Benhari from Friends of The North Coast and The Rural Binny Doon Association has been a leading voice pleading for planning and more thinking before making the Cotoni Coast Dairies land into a National Monument. I’ve lifted Ted’s entire Facebook message…he states

EDDIE PEABODY AND STRUM FUN. One of the finest strummers ever. Check
out his Harp/banjo
COAST DAIRIES STATE PARK. It’s a few years old but take a look at the area
around the proposed National Monument threat.
BARBARA DANE SINGS. Listen to Barbara sing a Girl of Constant Sorrow

“Thanks to all who went down to Cambria last Friday  to voice our concerns about Coast Dairies being proclaimed a national monument. It was our only opportunity to talk directly to Neil Kornze, head of the BLM, who will be reporting back to Interior Secretary Sally Jewell about whether to recommend that Pres. Obama issue the proclamation under the National Antiquities Act.
Sempervirens Fund bused a load of people down, and there was another busload of Amah Mutsun Indians, presumably paid for by Sempervirens. People who wanted to speak had to put in a request, identifying which of the 6 properties included in the Eshoo/Boxer bill they were going to talk about. Since we comprised perhaps 10% of the audience, we thought many of us might not get called on to speak, even for the scant 1 minute allowed each speaker.

However, and happily, everyone who asked to speak got their minute. The pro-monument crowd parroted the false claims that Sempervirens has trumpeted from the beginning of the campaign: 1. that there would be more “protection” – we know it is already secured from development, mining, and motorized recreation, etc. by very specific deed restrictions and a Coastal Development Permit – and of course, no one specified what the additional protections might be. 2. That it would save 500 acres of redwood forest. There is no “redwood” forest. The redwoods were all logged over 100 years ago. The 500-forested acres are a mix of oak, fir, madrone and some stands of redwood, much like the canyons in the rest of Bonny Doon.

3. That monument status would bring more funding for stewardship. The only money guaranteed by monument status is $3 an acre, or about $18,000 a year; BLM would have to compete for more funds annually out of a shrinking Park Service budget with the other 50 or so national monuments.
However, Sempervirens board member Fred Keeley said at the meeting that they would donate an unspecified amount of volunteer labor and money annually to help out. BLM certainly will need it to deal with the additional crowds lured by the worldwide publicity monument status will bring. He also said he recognized our concerns and that the difference between our positions was that Sempervirens wants monument status first and planning afterward, while we want planning first and then, if it seems like the best way to manage Coast Dairies, monument status. Isn’t the definition of planning that it’s something you do BEFORE you act?

Given Sempervirens’ political connections and the repeated downplaying of our concerns by Sen. Boxer and Rep. Eshoo we expect that the presidential proclamation will occur within the next two months. So we are also working hard to try to get the Board of Supervisors conditions of support – regarding traffic, funds for law enforcement and emergency response, etc. – written directly into the proclamation language so it is legally binding in perpetuity”.

WIDENING WON’T WORK. To get all the details on why auxillary lanes, and widening highways has never worked go to the Widening Won’t Work website… https://wideningwontwork.org  Over and over again, transportation and traffic experts tell us that there isn’t one case where auxillary lanes or widening freeways/highways has not only NOT eased the traffic problem BUT those new lanes increased the traffic problem. If you’re keeping track of which Santa Cruz City Council candidates are supporting Measure D, the highway widening – 30 year-  $500, 000, 000 tax we’ll be paying,  Sandy Brown is supporting it. Please note…no comment on her decision. Also note that …

INFAMOUS ROPE TRICK. It doesn’t matter how many times you watch this, it’s still great magic. Ralph Davila sent it.

HISTORICAL PHOTO CAPTION CORRECTION. Linda Rosewood corrected my historical photo caption from last week (scroll down to check it out )  She says “The Kerrick Laundry was at 616 Front, which is around where CVS is now, at the corner of Soquel and Front, not Front and Cathcart. The laundry business was purchased by the Bariteau brothers in 1957, when the property became part of the urban renewal and flood control projects of that era. The photo was probably taken because those buildings were about to be torn down. Santa Cruz Sentinel, Sept 11, 1957 page 1.

HISTORICAL PHOTO CAPTION ADDITION.  Ray Ginghoffer saw the photo of the two Yellow Cab guys in front of trhe City Hall two columns ago (scroll way down) . He says…” I think the man on the left is Joe Basso, the father of Jim Basso, current owner of  Yellow cab.  I think. Ray”. Now we can wonder was it “Basso” or “Bosso”?

NEW CABRILLO CONDUCTOR. I received a few negative comments and questions about Cristian Macelaru the new man that the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music hired to conduct the Festival. I said that he has been conducting dead composers such as Dvorak, Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, as well as Copland, Bartok, Faure, Bruchner, Enescu and Orff. I have no idea of what age or vintage musics he’ll be conducting once he gets here. I’m betting that the Festival and Cristian are well aware of the new kid composers Marin Alsop made so popular over her 25 years here. Lets wait and see what Cristian does when he has such an accepting Santa Cruz audience.

Mr. Paul Elerick of Aptos has returned and writes…

SUMMERS IN MICHIGAN

After spending six of the last eight weeks in Michigan, I like to share a few highlights.  For those who aren’t aware of it, the western part of Michigan’s lower peninsula  is one long string of sandy beaches, lakes and golf courses. And many 1st class wineries especially in the Traverse City area. I plan to spend lots more summer months there along with a wonderful friend that I’ve known for 50 years.  Here are a few “must sees” if you’re ever there.  Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, State Park Beaches at Pentwater, Holland, Grand Haven and all up and down the coast of Lake Michigan.  They’re all clean and well managed.  The coastal towns of Pentwater, Saugatuck, Holland, Silver Lake Dunes… the list is lots longer.  Hard to beat in the summer.

I’ll also make a pitch for the excellent health care that I received at Spectrum hospital in Grand Rapids when I needed emergency care.  This organization has ultra-modern facilities and took over the older hospitals like the one I was born in and the one our son was born in.

It’s always nice to be home to Aptos though.  Glad to see PDC running smoothly  with endorsement forums!

(Paul Elerick is a member of, and former co-chair of the Campaign for Sensible Transportation, http://sensibletransportation.org . He’s a current member of Nisene to Sea, a group of mid-county citizens committed to maintaining an open hiking trail from Cabrillo College to Nisene Marks State Park

RAPE REDUX.

How many rapes and attempted rapes committed within the city of Santa Cruz have been reported to the Santa Cruz Police Department (SCPD) this year? You don’t know? Not surprising since the usual sources of information such as the daily Sentinel, police alerts and neighborhood alerts have been silent on this issue.

As of July 2016, the latest data entry on the SCPD website for this year, there have been twenty-nine rapes and attempted rapes reported.  That is one rape or attempted rape reported each week. And reported rapes are a fraction of those committed. Do you recall any rapes included in the Sentinel crime report this year? In theory, rape is a felony, one of the most serious of crimes and yet it rates no mention in the usual channels of public communication. I think it naive to conclude that this is an oversight. And if it is, that is revealing.

This attempt to bury the high incidence of reported rape in the city of Santa Cruz has a long history. In the early 1980’s, I compiled a document detailing the problems within the SCPD regarding their mostly poor handling of rape. The city council shelved the report. Some changes were recommended by the city Commission for the Prevention of Violence Against Women but few were adopted. I quit the Commission out of frustration. Twenty years later, I reapplied to be a member of the Commission. With new membership and great energy, we embarked on an updated report on rape within the city and a review of police handling of rape, which constituted one of the Commissions charges under the Ordinance that created it in 1981. The 2003 Report on Rape used data from that submitted by SCPD to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report. We contracted with Applied Survey Research to analyze the data and draw some correlations. The results were not pretty. The incidence of reported rape in Santa Cruz city was one of the highest in the state and most significantly, the percentage committed by strangers as compared with non-strangers (sometimes referred to as acquaintances) was out of all proportion to the national average. In some police beats it was over 50% of the total while the national average is 15%. The rate of arrest was also off the charts on the low end of the scale. Before we could even submit the report to council, SCPD heads went on the attack, providing council with misleading data, debunking the report and discrediting the commission, especially its chair. By the time I was up for reappointment, the word was that I intimidated staff (staff shielded the police) and was too difficult to work with. During the same time I received an award for leadership from the Commission at its 25th anniversary but no mind, then councilmember Mike Rotkin refused to reappoint me while current Mayor Cynthia Mathews is reported to have said that she will block any attempt by any councilmember to ever appoint me to the Commission.  No council member has since supported my numerous applications to be appointed. In the meantime the Commission has revised its charge from an oversight body of SCPD for their handling of rape and domestic violence to one of working with the SCPD to address the issues. It meets only 6 times a year and has vastly reduced the scope of its work.

#262 / Inspiring To Millions
There was an article in The New Yorker, dated September 23, 2015. The article, by Allyson Hobbs, was titled, “Why Aren’t We Inspired By Hillary Clinton?” In fact, millions of people (including millions of voters) ARE inspired by Hillary Clinton. A letter published in “The Mail” section of the most recent edition of The New Yorker comments on this topic with respect to a different New Yorker article, not the Allyson Hobbs’ article, but a commentary by Steve Coll.

Sharona Muir, of Perrysburg, Ohio (a “swing state, incidentally), complains about a “hold your nose and vote” tone of voice in commentaries about Clinton and her candidacy. Here is what she says about Clinton: The possibilities that Clinton’s nomination holds for our society’s greater freedom are tremendous. It’s time that Coll and The New Yorker understand the fact that, and the reasons that, Secretary Clinton’s nomination is actually inspiring to millions of voters.

CLASSICAL DeCINZO. DeCinzo adds Helen Keller to our water problem. Scroll down.

EAGAN’S DEEP COVER. Eagan deplores today’s current political scene…see below just a bit…

LISA JENSEN LINKS. Lisa writes: “Discover another reason to love vintage books, as we discover a treasure in our rafters, this week at Lisa Jensen Online Express (ljo-express.blogspot.com). Also, head over immediately to the Del Mar to see The Light Between  Oceans — quick, while it’s still on a big screen! You don’t see such a beautifully  made movie for grown-ups often enough!” Lisa has been writing film reviews and columns for Good Times since 1975.

It’s as much fun as it is moving, sensitive , and well made. Frank Langella and Steve Zahn add to this hit film. Go for/to it!!

COMPLETE UNKNOWN. Just 44 on Rotten Tomatoes !! Rachel Weisz and Michael Shannon take the leads in this complex puzzle of a film. Rachel Weisz plays a woman who has chenged her identity and continues to do so much to the deep anguish it has caused Shannon her former lover. Exactly why she keeps changing identities and moving around the world is weird, unexplained and psychotic. Danny Glover and Kathy Bates almost sneak into bit parts. The movie is missing something but it’s slow moving and I fell asleep a few times. If you do go send me your explanation…please??

FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS. The ever-popular,  award winning Meryl Streep mugs , struts and acts her way through this odd portrait of an eccentric totally tone deaf New York socialite in the early 1940’s, Florence Foster Jenkins caught syphilis from her first husband, divorced him, kept his name and married another rich fellow socialite. She loved music, was friends with Arturo Toscanni but because of the tertiary stages of the disease, was unable to accurately hear her own singing voice. She gave concerts and recorded records and made millions laugh at her bizzarre off key voice. It’s a cute, somewhat serious comedy…and again Meryl Srreep has the lead with Hugh Grant playing a good older version of Hugh Grant, and you know what that means.

DON’T BREATHE. This film has all the makings of a very scary horror flick. Timing, characters, kids locked in a house with a blind army veteran who wants to kill them because they tried to rob him. Yet, it lacks something and I’ve been thinking about it for three days and I still can’t figure why it doesn’t work. Great tension, fine acting, plenty of surprises, and yet it doesn’t add up. Maybe it’s because the blind veteran is also evil, and focused on killing. Maybe it’s because the kids were wrong in the first place in trying to rob him. But if you’ve seen everything else in town…this one won’t bore you, I promise.

SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU. This is worse than a Hallmark greeting card! Cloying, genuflecting, dull, and an unjustified view of how Barack wooed Michelle back in their Chicago days. Aside from the apparent facts that Obama smokes a lot and doesn’t like ice cream and that Michelle doesn’t like pie, there’s nothing to gain from seeing this trite mess. It’s genuinely boring too. You’ll keep waiting for something of substance, or conflict, or some kind of problem might be dealt with…nope, all sugar and spice. Well, not even spice actually.

JASON BOURNE.The minute you leave the theatre this movie will seem like a dream you had. It’s fuzzy, unclear, random scenes in random order, no real meaning…just like a dream. The director tried to make some new kind of spy killing, car chase, fie, explosion movie. Edits, cuts, dialogue are all mixed up and mixed together…it makes little or no sense at all. Matt Damon, Tommy Lee Jones, Vincent Cassell, Alicia Vikander, and Riz Ahmed from “The Night Of” all do their best, but it’s all the director’s fault. Well, Matt Damon just phoned in his part and he’s terrible. And it’s still better than  Mechanic: Resurrection

DATELINE September 12, 2016

NO ON MEASURE D (widening Highway 1). A member of Widening Won’t Work attended a “GET SANTA CRUZ MOVING” presentation. And sent this… The Get Santa Cruz Moving campaign has paid staff and has raised $450,000.  RTC  has 17 staff and a budget of ???.” So, the little guy is up against a $450,000 ad campaign.  The WWW budget is 1% of theirs so far…. Where is the $450,000 coming from? And that’s a lot of money to make sure this passes..are they frightened their product has holes and need to push a lot of propaganda down our throats? Kinda like the overblown ad budgets for smoking cigarettes… Let’s not forget that The Santa Cruz Land Trust endorses Measure D and that the Land Trust gave $10, 000 to support the measure.

http://www.landtrustsantacruz.org/land-trust-endorses-transportation-measure/

In expectation of the passing of Measure D, The Land Trust recently sent an email advertising a 10hr/wk 10 month job to coordinate projects. Hey, not so fast, right?

The Get Santa Cruz Moving campaign now has paid staff and has raised $450,000.  RTC  has 17 staff and a budget of ???.” So, the little guy is up against a $450,000 ad campaign.  The Widening Won’t Work budget is 1% of theirs so far…. Where is their $450,000 coming from? And that’s a lot of money to make sure this passes..are they frightened thier product has holes and need to push a lot of propaganda down our throats? Kinda like the overblown ad budgets for smoking cigarettes…Has anyone (like the public) seen any disclosures filed with the FPPC for the Yes on D folks ? How can they have $450,000 without disclosing any information?  A primarily formed ballot measure committee must report receipt of each contribution totaling $1,000 or more within 24 hours during the 90 days before the election, including the date of the election.  Time for another FPPC inquiry?

Last word in about the forces pushing Measure D is… Student interns up at USCS and Cabrillo are being advertised and sought to canvas for Yes on Measure D. We’re getting set for a blitz with that $450,000 war chest proponents of Measure D have to spend! It’s truly David vs. Goliath.

COTONI NOT COTATI… I had a lot of stuff about the proposed Cotoni Coast Dairies National Monumental Disaster in last week’s column. But in my haste to go to Sacramento for a few days, I had a bunch of mistakes . Ever vigiliant Ted Benhari of the Rural Bonny Doon Association and Friends of the North Coast wrote…” would be possible to insert that that was a post on the Friends of the North Coast Facebook page? We’ve also learned that Sempervirens has alerted its members that soon there will be a public meeting organized by Boxer and Eshoo with the Interior Dept. to talk about the monument.

Don’t yet know where or when, but on 9/16 there is a similar meeting in Cambria to talk about the Piedras Blancas site that is one of the other 3 properties in the addition to the California Coastal National Monument bill with Coast Dairies. By the way, the property is Coast Dairies & Land, not the reverse, and if it becomes a monument it will be called Cotoni Coast Dairies (not Cotati). And it doesn’t include any former Cemex or Davenport land”. Here’s another post from Ted on the Friends Facebook page…Here’s the key point of difference between us and Sempervirens Fund regarding monument status for Coast Dairies. It’s an excerpt from the email Sempervirens sent yesterday about the upcoming public meeting with the Dept. of the Interior. It’s why we fear the impact of heavy public visitation on Coast Dairies’ fauna and flora, our infrastructure and public services, North Coast beaches, farms and the town of Davenport.  “The 5,800-acre Cotoni-Coast Dairies property, located just east of the town of Davenport, is a prime example of the region’s riches. Plus it connects to 15,000 acres of protected lands, forming a 21,000-acre area of wild lands just an hour from the Bay Area’s 7 million people.”
Many of you probably saw the recent video of people toppling the striking and beloved Duckbill sandstone spire on the coast of Oregon, and have been angered and saddened by the increasing proliferation of graffiti on Panther and other Santa Cruz North Coast beaches. Is there any justification for making Coast Dairies any more attractive to visit, when it’s already fully protected and there is so little additional money that will be available to BLM to manage and monitor it? Would be great to write some letters to the Sentinel ASAP about the unfairness of holding the only meeting on monument status for Coast Dairies with national leaders in Cambria, 3 hours away, on a work day, with only a week’s notice. Clearly a transparent effort to stifle dissent while pretending you (Sen. Boxer and Rep. Eshoo) actually care about public opinion. Go to santacruzsentinel.com, click on Opinion in the menu bar, and click on Submit Letters”.

ALERT!! Just got the letter below from Rep. Eshoo. Next Friday (Sept. 16)  at 2 p.m. the only (as far as we know) public meeting with Dept. of Interior officials, who will be recommending to Pres. Obama whether to declare Coast Dairies a national monument, will take place in CAMBRIA! This is obviously a deliberate move to try to keep opposition voices from being heard. We hope as many of you as possible will attend. Let us know and we can carpool or even rent a van or bus”. All that’s from the Friends FB page.

KROHN’S KICKOFF PARTY. A hugely energetic and eager crowd of over 100 folks  gathered together to help send Chris Krohn to the Santa Cruz City Council last Saturday (9/10) afternoon. Long time supporters and former councilpersons such as Sally DiGirolamo, Carole DePalma and Ed  Porter were having a great time and Sally reminded me that she was the only Democrat on the council at the time!!! Proving again that electing a “Brand New Council” can be done. Shelley Hatch, Ed Porter, Nancy Abbey, Ralph Metberg, Nora Hochman, Sandy Brown and Steve Schnaar all listened as Chris Krohn gave us his ideas. He talked about his 12 years working at UCSC and learning how the Campus works, he spoke about how our present City Council allowed The Beach Flats Community Garden to be cut in half, and how the developers along with the Corridor plan are all set to ruin the Branciforte neighborhood. It was a fine and encouraging great time.

SAND ART. I haven’t watched one for years but these are still amazing.

CABRILLO FESTIVAL’S NEW MALE CONDUCTOR!! The news is out that The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music hired a man to replace Marin Alsop as conductor and music director. His name is Cristian Macelaru and If you go to Cristian Macelaru’s personal website you’ll see he’s very happy to get the job. http://macelaru.com . He’s a violinist. And if you’re wondering what kind of music he’ll bring to the Festival we can see he likes to conduct relatively recently dead  and also some long passed composers such as Dvorak, Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, as well as Copland, Bartok, Faure, Bruchner, Enescu and Orff.  No mention of any Leonard Bernstein material. The New York Times (Sept. 4) ran a full page on the glass ceiling that still exists and is even rampant in the major orchestra conducting profession. The article stated that Marin Alsop is still the “only woman leading one of America’s two dozen big-budget orchestras. That works out to a little over 4.1 percent”. Marin is still conducting the Baltimore Symphony.  ‘Twas an unusual remark Marin said to the packed Civic auditorium on her closing night after 25 years at the Cabrillo podium “I don’t know where you were when we started”. But it was true, it took years before Santa Cruzans began appreciating Marin and her choice of music and musicians. As far as popularity,  Marin and the Cabrillo Festival had bigger Santa Cruz audiences than political critic and filmaker Michael Moore !!

MORE ABOUT MARIN. I found this news someplace…” In what might be taken as one more sign that the United States and Cuba are getting friendlier, an American conductor will lead a Cuban orchestra in a concert celebrating the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana.Baltimore Symphony Orchestra music director Marin Alsop will conduct the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba in an outdoor performance Oct. 9 in the Plaza de la Catedral of Old Havana. Joining Alsop and the orchestra will be two celebrated pianists — one from the classical arena, Lang Lang; the other a major figure in Afro-Cuban jazz, Chucho Valdés. The concert is a co-production of CAMI Music and ELCCNY, in cooperation with the Cuban Institute of Music in Havana and the Ministry of Culture of Cuba”.

TEXTING AND DRIVING. We keep reading those truly horrible statistics about the dangers of texting and driving….and of course it’s against the law. But most folks keep doing it anyways. Along with that though, why aren’t there laws against drive in restaurants serving burgers to drivers? Or the ticketing of drivers who are eating while driving?? A burger is much trickier to eat and drive than texting.

QUICK POLITICAL QUESTION. Right now, without looking, and without asking anybody…what’s the first and last name of Hillary’s vice president candidate?

RALPH ABRAHAM’S BOOK SIGNING. It’s only an hour long, including T. Michael Walker and psychedelic stuff.

DEBUNKING THE GROWTH MODEL

First a clarification regarding my comment in last week’s piece regarding the greenbelt, infilling and ever-increasing housing costs. As written it implied that the greenbelt was the cause. While this has some validity, it is more accurate to say that the greenbelt has been exploited as justification for the current frenzy to build, build, build as high as possible and as dense as possible and re-zone to exceed all prior limits. It is fair to say that most who worked to secure the greenbelt lands were motivated by a love of open space and a desire to protect it. Most did not have plans for high density housing in their back pockets.  But most did not continue to be involved as the years of General Plan meetings dragged on and those who did favor density and growth got to define the narrative: that by adopting a greenbelt around our town we accepted high density growth and infilling as the trade-off. Planning Commissioners remind us of this quid pro quo at every meeting and you can read it on some of the council candidate’s campaign literature.

It’s not too late for an alternative narrative: we saved our greenbelt and we will fight to save our town from high-density growth. No trade-offs!  We can demonstrate that building more and more housing units has not and will not lower the cost of housing. All new housing stock is expensive even the so-called “inclusionary” units.  In fact, bulldozing an existing cottage and replacing it with dense apartments can be shown to increase the cost of housing. We can challenge the claim that new housing is “work-force” housing unless that term really refers to highly paid tech workers.  We can counter argue that building dense housing for students downtown and elsewhere will not relieve the pressure on single family houses currently occupied by students if UCSC continues to grow at the current rate. And if more students are lured off-campus into dense student housing, that shift will trigger a crisis of lowered on-campus occupancy rate, raising rents big-time on campus leading to increased rents off-campus. We can point out the illogic in the pro-density arguments such as the oft quoted “we need to accommodate the growth that has already occurred.” If they are here they have been accommodated.  Most of the real estate sales are for second-homes or investment properties. What the pro growth interests really mean is “we need to accommodate future growth because there is money to be made in the process.” There is a difference between accepting that some growth will occur and promoting that growth, the latter being the agenda both at UCSC and among the developer class.

#252 “WILL SCIENCE SAVE US ?”

Human activity, ignoring the rules, laws, and principles that govern the World of Nature, has now created a situation in which our human civilization is being placed at extreme risk. All forms of life, in fact, not just human life, are being threatened, and a massive extinction event is under way. The name of the activity causing our current crop of problems goes, mostly, under the title, “Global Warming,” though with temperatures having reached 129 degrees in the Middle East, rather recently, and apparently likely to head even higher, the word “warming” is a little bit less than fully descriptive.

As we all know (I hope we all know this), human activities that result in the release of greenhouse gases, and particularly carbon dioxide, are the cause of the global warming that is putting human civilization, and all life, both human and non-human, in peril. The combustion of hydrocarbon fuels is the main culprit, as (again, I hope) we all know.

LO AND BEHOLD, REVERIES OF THE CONNECTED WORLD. First of all it gets a 93 on Rotten Tomatoes. Another excellent film from one of the very few living directors who know how to make a statement and still make good films, Werner Herzog. Herzog guides us through the new world of the internet in this documentary and gives us enormous topics and information re internet stuff to make you really wonder about our future and how the internet has and will continue to change our world. I guarantee that there’s at least a dozen ideas, and pieces of news you’ve never drempt of…and that will change how you look at your iPhone and keyboard from now on. Only go if you like thinking about big things. Its last day is Thursday (9/13).

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC. Viggo Mortensen, the lead in this family saga, has never been better, and he’s almost always excellent. It’s as much fun as it is moving, sensitive , and well made. Frank Langella and Steve Zahn add to this hit film. Go for/to it!!

WAR DOGS. Jonah Hill and Miles Teller do some fine acting in this only half-serious drama about how much money shysters in the United States make when we are at war. You’ll wonder if the USA could even stay alive financially if we weren’t always at war or “Peace Keeping” as it’s called. Not a great film but it does get the message across. Last day is Thursday (9/13)

MORGAN. Ridley Scott’s son directed this Sci-Fi thriller about creating near-humans. Kate Mara, Michelle Yeoh, and Toby Jones make this movie work fairly well. “Ex Machina” and Scarlett Johansson in “Lucy” sort of fit into the same “good but not great” bag.

JASON BOURNE. The minute you leave the theatre this movie will seem like a dream you had.

STAR TREK BEYOND. The third in the new Trek movie series this is a waste of eveyone’s time and money. They cop out and show a photo of Leonard Nimoy about half way through and show a snapshot of the entire Enterprise original 1966 crew. Mostly it’s just another throw bombs and shoot around corners (or curves on spaceships). Nothing near the humanity, intelligence, or real wit the original had, which made all of us such lifelong fans. The acting is terrible, the plot is meaningless. Go only if you need your periodic Star Trek Fix, and don’t care how “authentic” it is. ( I didn’t know Capt. James Kirk’s middle name was Tiberius and that Shatner is 85 years old and was born in Montreal).

SUICIDE SQUAD. Will Smith, Jared Leto, and Viola Davis could never be accused of acting in this horrible Gotham City disaster. Yep, Gotham City and yes Batman is in it for a few seconds but he doesn’t save this Super Hero flick from being one of the very worst ever made. (read any other review!!!). I could try to tell you about the plot, but there really isn’t one…it’s all violence, weird effects, killing, and to save production money most of it is filmed extra dark so you can’t see what might be around the corner. Don’t let anybody go, except your worst enemy. 26 on Rotten Tomatoes!! The executive producer of Suicide Squad and Sully is  Steven Munchin who is Donald Trump’s finance director, like I said above, if  it matters who you give money to!

SANTA CRUZ TAXI FLEET. The fleet is receiving a safety award, on May 7, 1951. Sort of odd, if you notice, that some of the cabs are Yellow Cabs, others are ACME. Also note that there are only four digits in their phone numbers. Anyone recognize either of those two men?

DATELINE SEPTEMBER 5, 2015

THE NEW BOARDWALK ENTRANCE!!! It couldn’t possibly be that the 12 (TWELVE)  million dollars  the Boardwalk is spending on their new entrance would be to convince the unsuspecting public that they do not have free access to the beach through the Boardwalk…and that they have to buy tickets??? I’m still betting Canfield et all have always wanted and plan on building a huge addition to the Boardwalk right exactly across the street, where Beach Flats sits. They’ve let their many, many houses and empty lots that they own in the flats go completely to hell just for that time when they can develop as big an amusement park where they can legally charge admission. By the way, ask the City Council candidates where they stand on how Cynthia Mathews and her trained monkeys treated the Beach Flats Community Gardens. Ask them, especially Cynthia, what their position will be regarding the Beach Flats Community itself.

BEER BOTTLE ORCHESTRA. Very far out orchestra.

KAEPERNICK ABOUT HILLARY & TRUMP

COTATI NATIONAL MONUMENTAL DISASTER. Many locals still don’t understand the full impact the declaring the Cotati- Cemex- Coast Land and Dairies- Davenport ranch area as a National Monument would have on our City and especially on our still semi wild North Santa Cruz County. The huge traffic on our nearly stalled Highway One, the killing and decimating of the wild life that exist there now are only some of the dangers. Those Hilltrompers who support this destruction of nature should be extra ashmed posing as nature lovers and protectors!!

Ted Benhari wrote a note to the FRIENDS OF THE NORTH COAST that said:

“It would be great if everyone wrote an email to President Obama – president@whitehouse.gov – with the message that even though protecting land by declaring it a national monument is generally a wonderful thing, in this case (Coast Dairies) the land is already fully protected and the BLM just doesn’t and won’t have the money to properly manage the hundreds of thousands of visitors that will want to come and check it out, and the local infrastructure (roads, law enforcement, fire services) just can’t handle it. It would only take 5 minutes to send this message, I think all of us can find an extra 5 minutes in our day to do it. Thanks!”

It’s the least we can do to protect the Coast Land and Dairies land. And we need to hurry before Barack leaves office!!

KAEPERNICK STANDS FOR WHAT EXACTLY? Damned right, he can and should sit during the national anthem if he chooses. Imagine just for a minute a full baseball or football stadium with everyone feeling totally free to sit or stand during the anthem…it would be like voting, we’d see how our huddled masses actually feel about our government, and our country. But mixing it up a bit, here’s a statement from The Federalist about Kaepernick’s attitude re Hillary. It never received much press. “San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who recently refused to stand during the national anthem at a preseason game, just unloaded on Hillary Clinton. “We have a presidential candidate who has deleted emails and done things illegally and is a presidential candidate,” he said, referring to the 15,000 emails Clinton “wiped” from her private, unsecured server she used during her tenure as secretary of State. “That doesn’t make sense to me.” “If it was any other person, they’d be in prison,” he said.” So what is this country really standing for?”

COUNCIL CAMPAIGNING. The Santa Cruz City Council Candidates and their campaigns are really underway…and Labor Day is more or less the real getting down to brass tacks startoff.  The turnouts at the Glover/Krohn/Sandy Brown/Schnaar events has been wonderful and like those endorsement meetings, full of great and NEW energy. People want to see and help to create a Brand New City Council that’s obvious. By the way, I have to apopogize… I said last week that I saw the Sentinel’s Bernie Sanders basher Steve Kessler at the London Nelson Bernie event on 8/24, and that he was clapping enthusiastically. He wasn’t there he told me. That guy sure looked like Kessler I even waved to him, he waved back, but Steve said nope not true, and that he’d never go to a Bernie event, and for sure wouldn’t applaud. Sorry to give the wrong impression, very sorry. If you want to be a part of, or just feel the energy of these campaigners go to Chris Krohn’s CAMPAIGN KICKOFF PARTY Saturday, September 10th from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM The home of Janet Gellman, 311 Park Way, Santa Cruz, CA

BERNIE’s “OUR REVOLUTION” MEETING. Tue Sept 20, 5:30pm – SC4Bernie General Meeting, 5:30pm potluck. 6:00pm Brand New Congress livestream. 6:30pm Brand New City Council Barnstorm and campaign workgroup breakouts for City of Santa Cruz campaign London Nelson Community Center, 301 Center St, Santa Cruz. RSVP here!

STARBUCKS ON OCEAN STREET. Doesn’t it seem to you like Santa Cruz has sold out again and again to all the corporate franchises? Can Ocean Street get any more touristy? Isn’t there some way to maintain what little character or authentic home town feeling we used to have? What’s amazing is that tourists still come here to see what? Well, there’s The Boardwalk and The University, they are unique for sure, but after that what draws attention? Certainly not another Starbucks.

Mr. Paul Elerick of Aptos has extended his vacation even longer…we’ll just have to assume he’ll be back someday.

WATCH US GROW!

The small, quiet central Florida town where my son moved to afford a home proudly displays its slogan, “Watch Us Grow!” At least they are honest about it. That slogan could easily describe the course set for Santa Cruz by a consortium of speculators, financiers, city planners and politicians, UCSC administrators, their business backers and second home owners who have an economic stake in growth.  The slogan these self-interests would like us to believe in is: “Trust Us. We Know What’s Best for You!” While they pay lip service to buzz words such as sustainability, neighborhood integrity and affordable housing, high rises displace single- family homes, UCSC hustles in more and more students, rents and housing costs escalate and public open space, the crown jewel of environmental activism from 40 years ago is neglected to the point where it is considered “unsafe.”

The ideology that holds this together and dismisses dissent is that growth is inevitable; we have to accommodate growth; managed growth is best left to experts; when we opted for a greenbelt we opted for increased density; increasing density leads to affordability. These core beliefs are widely held without question or examination. They are trotted out at every planning and council meeting whenever yet another new development is approved and neighbors’ concerns largely dismissed. As the pricy urban consultants like to say, Santa Cruz’s neighborhoods and main thoroughfares have a low profile and are underutilized. This suggests a lack of affection for what is established and familiar with a desired goal for transforming the town into an unrecognizable cityscape with profit as the motivator.  Perhaps the more accurate slogan is “Watch Us Make Money!”

PATTON’S PROGRAM. From Gary’s Two Worlds website…

#249 / The Biggest Threat To U.S. Sovereignty

Former United States Secretary of Labor Robert Reich has written an article that was published in the Sunday, August 14th edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Here’s a linking right here to another online source. It’s an article worth reading.
Reich’s article is titled, “Candidates solicit biggest threat to U.S. sovereignty” in the print edition, and “Foreign Cash Is Hijacking American Democracy,” in the online version. In his article, Reich takes on Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump. Trump is always talking about threats to the sovreignty of the United States, but Reich isn’t convinced that Trump knows there the problem really lies.

THAT IS THE QUESTION
(THE NEWEST FILMS IN ORDER OF PERFECTION)

THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS. Critics and most folks are calling this a romantic melodrama, I say that’s cheapening it. And gives it the wrong image  I call it a contemporary Greek Tragedy. Those classic tragedies were meant to stir your emotions, cause you to think about your deepest values, to help us learn about love, sacrifice, and morals.

STILL PLAYING AT A THEATRE NEAR US
FROM BEST TO REALLY BAD

INDIGNATION. If you liked Portnoy’s Complaint, Goodbye Columbus or  any and all of Philip Roth’s novels you’ll love this film. In 1951 a very nice teen age Jewish boy from New Jersey starts college and goes through sexual, religious, moral, and very touching life evolving events (most of which you probably did too!). The acting has no flaws or weak points, the story is pure Philip Roth and you’ll be moved like no other film in the last year or two.

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC. Viggo Mortensen, the lead in this family saga, has never been better, and he’s almost always excellent. She loved music, was friends with Arturo Toscanni but because of the tertiary stages of the disease, was unable to accurately hear her own singing voice. It’s a cute, somewhat serious comedy…and again Meryl Streep has the lead with Hugh Grant playing a good older version of Hugh Grant, and you know what that means.

Well, Matt Damon just phoned in his part and he’s terrible. And it’s still better than  Mechanic: Resurrection

MECHANIC: RESURRECTION. This got 24 on Rotten Tomatoes which puts it 3 below Ben Hur and 2 below Suicide Squad. Jason Statham does what is required while the special effects does all the rest. Jessica Alba cutes her way through the other usual car and boat chases. Just another James Bond, Mission Impossible spy-killer-travelogue, with extra blood. Don’t go.

STAR TREK BEYOND. The third in the new Trek movie series this is a waste of everyone’s time and money. They cop out and show a photo of Leonard Nimoy about half way through and show a snapshot of the entire Enterprise original 1966 crew. Don’t let anybody go, except your worst enemy. 26 on Rotten Tomatoes!! The executive producer of Suicide Squad Steven Munchin is Donald Trump’s finance director, if it matters who you give money to!

I go in spurts, watching the same types of videos for a while. This week, it’s been unexpected fan performances – you know, when the artist pulls someone out of the audience to perform with them on stage. Sometimes it’s cringe-worthy, and sometimes, like this one, it’s pure gold. Enjoy.

ROMANCE OF ROSY RIDGE, the movie 1947. The one guy in this photo is Van Johnson who was the star of the big budget MGM film Romance of Rosy Ridge, filmed up around Felton. See below for more details.  The girls in this photo are ( left to right) Bunty Braun, Joanne Nielsen, unknown, and Jolene Brogdan.  I watched the crowd scenes carefully and couldn’t spot any of the girls in the film. Besides it was set in 1865.

DATELINE AUGUST 29, 2016

POLITICS NOT AS USUAL. Not since the Santa Cruz SCAN (Santa cruz Action Network) was acting and active a few decades ago have I felt, or inentified with, the energy that happened last Wednesday (8/24) in the London Nelson center at the first real public gathering of Bernie Sanders followers to hear his speech and to start organizing locally to put those beliefs and principles into action. Even the Santa Cruz Sentinel’s weekly Bernie basher Stephen Kessler was there and he actually applauded Bernie’s speech several times!!! More than 250 folks, including lots of young people, watched Bernie’s speech then stayed to adopt Our Revolution bylaws and elect local officers. It felt like there was a new and strong hope for our political future. Especially when it was announced that, like the Brand New Congress goal of the national O.R. organization, the local group will focus on a Brand New Council. That’s Santa Cruz City Council and as you can guess only Chris Krohn, Drew Glover, Steve Schnaar, and Sandy Brown of the council candidates were there. It’s very clear now just where the 10 (or 11?) council candidates stand. Also predictable was that the pro developer, pro police, anti homeless  “right wing” of the Santa Cruz Democrat Party The Democratic Women’s Club  endorsed J.M Brown, Cynthia Mathews, Martine Watkins, and Robert Singleton, and we know what that means. If you want to watch Bernie’s speech go to www.ourrevolution.com .

INDIGNATION,  a clip from the excellent movie..now showing.
CANNON’S JUG STOMPERS. These were our musical heroes back in the day. The cartoon is just an added award.
PHILIP ROTH 44 MINUTE INTERVIEW ABOUT “INDIGNATION“. This Roth novel won more awards than you can imagine. It’s an excellent film, and learn even more from his interview here…

ENDORSEMENT SEASON.  So the combined membership of the People’s Democratic Club, and members of the  ACLU Santa Cruz County,  Affordable Housing Now!, Citizens Climate Lobby, Economic Justice Alliance, GLBT Alliance, NAACP Santa Cruz, Our Revolution, S.C. Chapter of the Sierra Club all met Monday night (8/29) to hear the 10 candidates (Nathaniel Kennedy was a no show) for their endorsements for the Santa Cruz City Council. London Nelson’s biggest meeting room was full with standing room only. Again, the energy was outstanding. As we’ve come to expect by now The Central Coast Labor Council, The People’s Democratic Club and OUR Revolution all voted to endorse the same four candidates Drew Glover, Steve Schnaar, Chris Krohn, and Sandy Brown. This will certainly be the team that draws the young voters, and draws the old timers back into campaigning and making solid changes in the Santa Cruz City Council.

EARTHQUAKES AND SANTA CRUZ. We’ve all been reading, watching, and hearing about the earthquake tragedies in all those towns and villages in Italy last week. We’ve also seen numerous comparisions with our Santa Cruz location atop another seismic fault that is equally dangerous. It must dawn on more than a few of us….just how prepared is our Santa Cruz city when/if the next”BIG ONE” hits??? Has any citizen ever been informed as to iPhone, cell phone, internet, even land line phone numbers to call when the power goes out (Which it always does even with no earthquakes). Do we know where to go, which routes to drive to, any medical sources, any search crews to help when we need them? What about when Highway One north or south is blocked or Highway 17 is shut down? We were certainly NOT prepatred when the 1989 quake hit us. What’s changed since then? Are all the new high rise hotels being built in the county certified earthquake safe? I think there are dinky maps someplace online showing where the ocean will flow when the next tsunami rushes in. That’s it for tsunami help !!! Experts all tell us another big, very big techtonic plate shift/earthquake is coming within the next 30 years. Isn’t it up to the City Council to be sure we’re ready? Shouldn’t we be better informed and why don’t we know more about how any and all of our related City (and County) departments have prepared or are preparing??? Somebody has to ask these queations….and we need to get those answers ASAP.

OUR REVOLUTION LOCAL DETAILS. Jeffrey Smedberg was/is one of the most active members of the Santa Cruz for Bernie team. He sent an email Friday 9/26 part of which reads, “Arguing that we will be more effective in local politics as a legitimate organization, Jeffrey Smedberg presented draft bylaws, developed by the Organizational Structure Project Team founded at our SC4B meeting in July.  These governing rules, which were adopted, may be viewed on our website here.  The first action under the new Bylaws was election of officers for the remainder of 2016.  Elected were Co-Convenors Marion Brodkey and Magi Amma, Treasurer Mary Graydon-Fontana, Recording Secretary Zena Krakowsky, and Membership Secretary Jeffrey Smedberg.

On behalf of our Local Politics Project Team, Erik Eriksen described their research on Santa Cruz City Council candidates and their plan to build a campaign for a progressive Brand New Council. As tasks were described that are necessary to win an election, Berners eagerly committed to future neighborhood door-knocking and phone calling shifts on this Brand New Council Volunteer Sign-Up GoogleForm to support any progressive Santa Cruz City Council candidates we may endorse. As we read above, that’s now been decided, it’s  Drew Glover, Chris Krohn, Steve Schnaar, and Sandy Brown.

ROMANCE OF ROSY RIDGE, THE MOVIE. Just a slight change of subject, but Romance of Rosy Ridge was one of a very few big Hollywood studio movies ever to bring big stars and film the major part of the film in Santa Cruz County. Back in 1947 MGM, in addition to introducing and starring Janet Leigh in her first big film, brought Van Johnson, Guy Kibbee, Marshall Thompson, Thomas Mitchell, and little Dean Stockwell all to Santa Cruz and more specifically to fields and farms around FeltonTurner Classic Movies (TCM) showed it last week and it’s available on their website. I hadn’t seen it in 69 years, and worked hard at this viewing to spot any identifiable local sights or scenery. Nothing to spot at all. Only the trees and vague valleys looked familiar . And I’d always assumed that with Van Johnson and Janet Leigh and the usually funny Guy Kibbee that it was a comedy or musical…not at all. It’s set in 1865 in the Missouri Ozarks just after the Civil War and centers entirely on the bigotry and hatred between the Yankees and the Rebels. It almost goes without saying that Van Johnson is the Yankee who falls in love with Janet Leigh, the southerner. MacKinly Kantor one of the screen writers also wrote The Best Years of Our Lives. Lester Cole the other screenwriter was a member of the blacklisted Hollywood Ten. So obviously this film meant a lot back then. Check out IMDB to see plenty more details.

WAINER RETROSPECTIVE AT BLITZER. Mark Wainer (retired Orthopedic surgeon) has taken the art of photography to new levels…and he’s been doing that for 25 of the 50 year retrospective that will be featured at the Blitzer gallery starting this First Friday (Sept. 2, 5 -9 p.m.) He began with film, chemicals and enlargers all those years ago  and jumped into computers and PhotoShop decades ago. Check out his 13 portfolios at http://www.markwainer.com/Artist.asp?ArtistID=32140&Akey=88KMSY3K . especially look at the “Abstract Art” portfolio it’s all done on screen,  no photos were used (like finger painting)That’s the old Wrigley Plant 5 pm. 2801 Mission Street extension. It’ll be there through October 1st.

MERCHANT OF VENICE, GLOBE THEATRE VERSION. The Nickelodeon played London’s Globe Theatre’s 2015 production of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice at 11 am last Sunday morning (Aug.28). don’t tell Rabbi Rick that the theatre was packed!!! Shakespeare theatre productions rarely have any remarkable size audiences at all in the Del Mar or Nick, but Shylock filled the house. What is increasingly rare anywhere in the world today is that it was staged and acted, cast and costumed exactly the way Shakespeare wrote it!!!Jonathan Pryce was Shylock and was magnificent.

ELERICK’S INPUT. Mr. Paul Elerick of Aptos writes…still vacationing.

CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK
Birth and Politics

The Santa Cruz City council appeared glum as they voted to postpone discussion of and vote on the Wharf Master Plan’s Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) from the August 23rd meeting to the November 22nd. meeting. As project planner Norm Daly explained in requesting such a postponement, “comments came in overnight and it is important to give those comments due consideration.” Really? Due consideration was not given to public comments that were submitted months ago to address inadequacies in the MND, so why the sudden concern at the 11th hour?

On Monday August 22nd. delivery nurses advised us to return home since there would be no baby coming that day. Labor for my daughter-in-law would be longer than expected. To pass the time at home I decided to see what was on city council agenda for the following day. I hadn’t heard of any big issues expected although one never knows. There it was, the Wharf Master Plan MND, tucked neatly away in the afternoon agenda. I had asked planner Daly to give me a heads-up on a likely date for the issue to be on council agenda and he demurred, telling me to check the agendas myself. As anyone who follows this process knows, council agendas are posted late Thursday, affording just 3 days to read the documents which can be lengthy, craft a response and get that into council by Monday, which they state is the latest for emails to successfully reach them before the council meeting. I had just a few hours. I quickly read the staff report and Daly’s responses to comments on the MND, noting that he placed all environmental impacts from the project in the category of “no impact.” or “less than significant impact if mitigated.”

PATTON’S PROGRAM. From Gary’s Two Worlds website…

Today, let me highlight an essay by Captain Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Watson has written an article titled, “The Laws Of Ecology And The Survival Of The Human Species.” It is definitely worth reading! Watson’s article makes one of the main points that I have wanted to make as I write this Two Worlds blog, and Watson’s words have given me the title to my posting #232 – The Four Horses Have Arrived: We made the mistake of declaring war on nature, and because of our technologies it looks like we are going to win this war. But because we are a part of nature, we will destroy ourselves in the process. Our enemy is ourselves and we are slowly becoming aware of that indisputable fact.

EAGAN’S DEEP COVER. Eagan goes deep inside Hillary’s campaign-  scroll below… And there are two new cartoons posted at TimEagan.com: Deep Cover and Subconscious Comics The latest EaganBlog, Double Take is here.

LISA JENSEN LINKS. Lisa’s on another vacation, some more!! Lisa has been writing film reviews and columns for Good Times since 1975

THAT IS THE QUESTION
(THE NEWEST FILMS IN ORDER OF PERFECTION)

MECHANIC: RESURRECTION. This got 24 on Rotten Tomatoes which puts it 3 below Ben Hur and 2 below Suicide Squad. Jason Stratham does what is required while the special effectsdoes all the rest. Jessica Alba cutes her way through the other usual car and boat chases. Just another James Bond, Mission Impossible spy-killer-travelogue, with extra blood. Don’t go.

It’s as much fun as it is moving, sensitive , and well made. Frank Langella and Steve Zahn add to this hit film. Go for/to it!!

WAR DOGSJonah Hill and Miles Teller do some fine acting in this only half – serious drama about how much money shysters in the United States make when we are at war. You’ll wonder if the USA could even stay alive financially if we weren’t always at war or “Peace Keeping” as it’s called. Not a great film but it does get the message across.

CAFÉ SOCIETY. Woody Allen’s newest starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Parker Posey and Steve Carell.

BEN HUR. It’s got chariot chases instead of car chases and they even threw in the crucifixation with Jesus carrying the cross not too gladly…and it’s still a jerky movie. Listen for classic Roman dialogue such as “Are we having fun yet brother” during the big chariot fiasco. Charlton Heston’s 1959 movie is still the one to remember. Donald Trump voters will probably like this one. 28 on Rotten Tomatoes.Yes, Morgan Freeman is in it…but it doesn’t matter.

SUICIDE SQUADWill Smith, Jared Leto, and Viola Davis could never be accused of acting in this horrible Gotham City disaster. One of the producers of Suicide Squad is Donald Trump’s finance director, if  it matters who you give money to!

COOPER STREET 1910. It’s almost shocking that we can still recognize the old County Bank Building after all these decades.  It was built after the 1894 fire. According to John Chase’s “Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture” and Ernest Otto that corner used to be a vacant lot that held tent shows “such as glass blowers or Millie Christine the Double Headed Woman”. Now it houses Pacific Wave, Laili, and one of the eight NextSpaces.

DATELINE August 22, 2016

BARBARA DANE. Back in 1963 Arhoolie Records shot this session at Barbara Dane’s house in Berkeley. We had a band and played around the Bay Area just a few times. That’s me on the left playing jug. Wayne Pope on the right on washboard and Dick Oxtot comes later playing stand-up bass. Barbara (age 89) has a brand new album being released this week. Huge article about her in Sunday’s (8/20/16) San Francisco Chronicle. (Webmistress note: I couldn’t find that one, but here’s one from Wednesday August 17. Barbara plays a show at Yoshis at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24. $25-$55. Yoshi’s, 510 Embarcadero W., Oakland. (510) 238-9200. www.yoshis.com)

CITY COUNCIL “FORUMS” CONTINUE. Wictionary says “Forum” means “discussion”. So far the two “forums” I’ve been to are just really, really short speeches by the candidates, which takes about two hours. The last one at the SEIU Hall (Aug. 18) had 9, not 11, of the candidates. SEIU talked to Nathaniel Kennedy and decided he wasn’t a serious candidate and didn’t invite him. Jim Davis the radio ad salesman got arrested the night before for drunk driving and was a no show!! It was mostly a Union audience so Cynthia Mathews was obviosly nervous and of course promised from now on everything would be all union in Santa Cruz. J.M Brown, Cynthia’s friend said about the same thing. Robert Singleton said he’s a Democrat and wants to bring all the businesses and people to Santa Cruz as soon as possible so the city will have more tax revenue!! He also wants more Section 8 housing…so does everybody. The tax measure D got us some idea of where the candidates are at. Martine Watkins, Robert Singleton, Jim Brown, Cynthia Mathews and Steve Pleitch all vote yes on Widening Highway One and the other covering -up benefits. Steve Schnaar, Sandy Brown, Chris Krohn and Drew Glover all say no to Measure D. Krohn’s idea is to put that $100 million into Metro and public transportation instead of Auxilliary Lanes. Sandy Brown also supports a minimum wage. Again on the issue of would you take developers money for your campaigns Cynthia Mathews, J.M Brown, Martine Watkins, and Robert Singleton all said yes. Krohn, Sandy Brown, Drew Glover, Steve Schnaar and Steve Pleitch all said no. There are many more “forums” coming up created by The Monterey Bay Labor Council, The People’s Democratic Club Forum (which will include the ACLU, The Sierra Club, The GLBT Alliance and others) , The Democratic Women’s Club, The Santa Cruz Downtown Association and probably a few more all within a few weeks. Go to one or more of them, see which candidates you believe will lead Santa Cruz in a progressive direction and end the the mess that the last few City Councils have gotten us into.

WIDENING WON’T WORK…VOTE NO ON MEASURE D.

The County claims that the November 8 Ballot Tax Measure D is “the solution” that will “ease traffic congestion on Highway 1″ by widening the Highway”. Why should voters agree to pay $100 million for something that even Caltrans own EIR study clearly says will not solve the problem it is intended to fix? Recent traffic studies conclude that highway widening does not solve the problem of highway traffic congestion. In fact, the opposite is true. Studies indicate that traffic actually increases with highway widening. That is why the state of California will no longer fund highway widening. There are faster, cheaper, more effective ways to improve travel. This ballot measure will cost us about a half billion dollars in new sales taxes. We need to invest in modern solutions that actually work. Other counties have improved travel without funding highway widening. A new Bay Area Commuter Benefits Program is drastically reducing single passenger car trips without raising taxes. We can do the same.

VOTE NO on Measure D to tell the decision makers that we want an improved transit system that actually works, doesn’t put more cars on the highway, doesn’t add to urban sprawl, and doesn’t add to climate change.

Concerned citizens have formed Widening Won’t Work to oppose the wasteful highway-widening plan. For more information visit: WideningWontWork.org. The campaign seeks volunteers and financial contributions. You are welcome to join the group. Attend our campaign Kickoff event on August 28th 3-5PM at Brommer Park (corner of Brommer & 30th Ave). Santa Cruz County can do better! Vote NO on Measure D.

#227….”THEY DIFFER ON TAXES”

According to The New York Times, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump differ on taxes. Click the link to read the article. Below, in a brief summary, is what The Times says about the candidates’ differing plans on tax reform at the federal level: “Hillary Clinton envisions a 4 percent tax surcharge for income over $5 million, meaning that the very highest earners would effectively have a nearly 44 percent top marginal rate. She also envisions implementing a rule so that those with income over $1 million pay at least 30 percent, aimed at preventing high earners from paying low overall rates thanks to the lower capital gains tax. She would also limit the value of tax deductions, and require longer holding periods to get the low long-term capital gains tax rate, among other steps that would make the tax code less favorable to the affluent.

MERCHANT OF VENICE, once only. The Globe Theatre’s production of Shakespeare’s “Merchant of Venice” starring Jonathan Pryce  will be playing just once… this Sunday August 28 at the Del Mar theatre at 11am. Like all Globe productions it’ll be staged and costumed in the original Shakespeare tradition. As one Chicago Tribune critic said, “In some of his most highly-charged scenes, Shakespeare dramatizes the competing claims of tolerance and intolerance, justice and mercy, while in the character of Shylock he created one of the most memorable outsiders in all theatre. Article here: Many sides of Shylock from Jonathan Pryce in this ‘Merchant of Venice’

LISA JENSEN LINKS. Lisa writes: “How cool was it to see my book, Alias Hook, performed live, onstage at Louden Nelson Center last weekend? Find out, this week at Lisa Jensen Online Express (http://ljo-express.blogspot.com). Special kudos to all the cast and crew at Santa Cruz Parks & Rec Teen Theatre for making the show so much fun!” Lisa has been writing film reviews and columns for Good Times since 1975

THAT IS THE QUESTION
(THE NEWEST FILMS IN ORDER OF PERFECTION)

INDIGNATION. If you liked Portnoy’s Complaint, Goodbye Columbus or  any and all of Philip Roth’s novels you’ll love this film. In 1951 a very nice teen age Jewish boy from New Jersey starts college and goes through sexual, religious, moral, and very touching life evolving events (most of which you probably did too!). The acting has no flaws or weak points, the story is pure Philip Roth and you’ll be moved like no other film in the last year or two.

WAR DOGS. Jonah Hill and Miles Teller do some fine acting in this only half – serious drama about how much money shysters in the United States make when we are at war. You’ll wonder if the USA could even stay alive financially if we weren’t always at war or “Peace Keeping” as it’s called. Not a great film but it does get the message across.

It’s hard to believe that “Hollywood” could still make a film this good after all these years of junk.

EQUITY. You can learn a lot about Wall Street from this film. Women both created and star in this adventure about how money is made and lost in the financial world.  A lot of the money tricks went over my head, and still you’ll stay totally attached all the way through it. You might even get philosophical by the ending and ask yourself are women any different than men…even in this cutthroat money market? Go see it, and it’s only once per day this week.

STILL PLAYING AT A THEATRE NEAR US
FROM BEST TO REALLY BAD

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC. Viggo Mortensen, the lead in this family saga, has never been better, and he’s almost always excellent. It’s as much fun as it is moving, sensitive , and well made. Frank Langella and Steve Zahn add to this hit film. Go for/to it!!

SANTA CRUZ’S BIGGEST BEACH TRAGEDY, THE DREAM INN. Area environmentalists got serious after The Dream Inn became a reality. This monstrosity (a nod to Honolulu and Rio’s beaches being ruined by hotels) happened back in April 26 1963. Across the street on the left is the Dominican Sisters Hospital, later morphed and moved into Dominican Hospital. Depot Park complete with Depot is there too, about dead center.

DATELINE August 15, 2016

James Davis at the Christian City Council Candidate thing.

Let “Jim” speak for himself!! If you really want to know about Jim Davis ask anyone at KPIG, (or the other stations he writes ads for) about his reputation…wow and whew!!!

Nathanael Kennedy at that Christian Council Candidate Thing.

CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES GENUFLECT. A church group sponsored the first collection of the eleven (11) Santa Cruz City Council Candidates gathering last Thursday August 11. In the High Street PeaceUnited Church out in the westside. As you can guess it attracted  a very different crowd (probably 250!!) than it will when another gathering is held at London Nelson Community Center. So white, westside, christians listened as the 11 candidates spoke as fast as they could in their given 5 minutes about absolutely nothing new or exciting. It  became even more clear that present and often mayor Cynthia Mathews has three staunch camp members who’ll follow her past and present pro-growth and harsh and demanding rulings. J.M Brown, Robert Singleton, and Martine Watkins will be right there for her. There probably won’t be any announced SLATE formed on either side. So then we have former mayor Chris Krohn, Drew Glover, Steve Schnar, Sandy Brown and Steve Pleitch on the progressive, environmental, sustainable growth, help the homeless side. Check out their websites, see if they commit to anything, and most importantly learn who’s endorsing them. Por Ejemplo, J.M. Brown campaign endorsers page has names like Baskin, Bosso, Colligan, Matt Farrell, Robert Singleton, Doug Ley, Fred Keeley, Hilary Bryant, Richelle Noroyan and more like that. Then again, there’s Nathaniel Kennedy who wants more public toilets and told us in great detail about what toilets are used for!!! Cynthia Mathews endorsers are just about the exact same as J.M Brown’s. Tons more to talk about…watch this space especially for the  next 10 weeks!!!

IMPROV HISTORY. SAN FRANCISCO’S “THE COMMITTEE” HISTORY.

MISS HAMLET, THE COMEDY & REACTIONS. Folks are still responding to my quest to find out just why Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s production of Hamlet that had Hamlet being a woman, drew so many laughs on opening night (and after that too, according to readers). It’s about an even bout between the acting being so shallow and Hamlet actually being played for any laughs they can get, to this reader who seemed to sum up the other reactions…

“I theorize the people laughing at Hamlet, are “Millennial”. I think it’s because they are so crippled by politically correct Bullpucky that they don’t know how to process 1. the world 2. their emotions 3. social interactions 4. them selves  without first checking what their other “peeps” are doing. They are Sheep, or Sleepwalkers, or Lemmings, take your pick”.

BERNIE SANDERS SANTA CRUZ REVOLUTION. Jeffrey Smedberg sends this…

Our Revolution is a new organization emerging from Bernie Sanders’ campaign that will continue to bring together a new majority for economic and social change by supporting candidates at the local, state, and national level who support the mission, issues and values of the Sanders campaign. The progressive community is invited to a potluck meeting to view Bernie’s live broadcast kickoff at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, August 24, at the London Nelson Community Center, 301 Center Street, Santa Cruz.

REFLECTIONS ON THE RENT PRICES IN SANTA CRUZ

I am reading the Santa Cruz Sentinel front page article, Rent: Squeezed in Santa Cruz (8/14/16) from 3,000 miles away in central Florida where a new 3-bedroom house can be bought for $140,000 or rented for $1200 a month. Even close to the University of Central Florida, rents are one third the rate in the city of Santa Cruz. Similar reasonable housing costs were typical for Santa Cruz when I arrived in 1975. If I were contemplating where to go to school or where to live and work as a young adult today, Santa Cruz would not be an option.

For years, city  and UCSC planners have been arguing that locals have to just get over the perception that Santa Cruz is a town and to get used to the idea that we are a city; that density, infilling and more and more housing are the only avenues to affordability. (Housing Study: Executive Summary 2002). The General Plan and Corridors Rezoning embody these concepts and high-rise buildings to match are already being approved with lots combined, single family homes and old-time businesses razed to make way for the new “smart growth” that according to the promoters will provide housing for our current workforce, our children and our seniors. What nonsense. Any return to the affordable housing of yesteryear is a chimera. Even a return to the housing costs of 2002 when the above document was written with hand wringing over the average housing cost of $480,000 is out of the question under current market conditions. Like it or not, housing is a commodity, exploited to generate profit. Under conditions of bottomless demand, currently being experienced by Santa Cruz and other Bay Area cities, the value and price of housing will continue to rise no matter how many units are built. What is lost in the process is the character and scale of Santa Cruz, irrelevant to the speculators and developers and increasingly  to the planners and elected decision makers, all of whom give lip service to retaining what’s left of the town as they bulldoze yet another lovely old building such as the one that housed the 1970’s and 80’s La Chaumiere restaurant on Ocean St. to make way for a Habit Burger chain.

PATTON’S PROGRAM. From Gary’s Two Worlds website…

The traffic on Highway One in Santa Cruz County is brutal. It’s ugly! It’s horrible. Naturally, elected officials would like to respond to the demand of voters and residents that something be done, and just as in the case of affordable housing, the first thing that comes to mind is that we should just “build our way out of it.”

Where transportation is concerned, a proposed “build our way out of it” solution is contained in a 2016 ballot measure, to be voted on this November. If passed by 2/3 of the voters, this measure would impose a 1/2-cent sales tax, to continue for thirty years. The resulting sales tax income would provide about $125,000,000 for highway widening, which could accomplish a very small part of the widening that the most zealous widening advocates are calling for.

THE COMMITTEE RETURNS. One of the USA’s best Improv groups. Re “Don’t Think Twice” critique below.

STILL PLAYING AT A THEATRE NEAR US
FROM BEST TO REALLY BAD

OUR LITTLE SISTER. 91 on Rotten Tomatoes!!! Many (including me) are calling it the Best film of 2016. Intelligent, sensitive, (Subtitled ) perfect acting, the direction assumes we have brains, and a heart. Three Japanese teen age sisters living alone learn they have another sister. The sister moves in with them, and the film takes us through every emotion we’ve ever had. It’s the kind of film we get to see very seldom nowadays. No blood, violence, car chases, or sex…just excellence. Please see it, it’ll re-affirm your faith in movies. (P.S. I’ll always try to say if a film is subtitled because I know it’ll turn off about 50 % of you immediately).

CAFÉ SOCIETY. Woody Allen’s newest starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Parker Posey and Steve Carell.

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC. Viggo Mortensen, the lead in this family saga, has never been better, and he’s almost always excellent. It’s as much fun as it is moving, sensitive , and well made. Frank Langella and Steve Zahn add to this hit film. Go for/to it!!

HUNT FOR WILDERPEOPLE. An excellent movie that has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. I had a problem with the New Zealand or “Kiwi” accents, and missed a few poignant scenes. See the video on the right for a quick tutorial. Also note it’s “WILDERpeople” as in WILDERNESS not WILDER as in State Park. It’s a scenic, sensitive, comedy about the adventures of a 13 year old misplaced orphan who meets up with grizzly, solitary Sam Neill. They escape authorities by existing in the wilderness of the New Zealand Bush Country. It’s also exciting, tight, creative, perfectly acted, and most importantly…ORIGINAL!! (In all fairness, it’s also cute, feel–good and improbable!)

JASON BOURNE. The minute you leave the theatre this movie will seem like a dream you had.

GHOSTBUSTERS 3. Remember that there was a sequel also with the original cast in 1989. As most movie fans know, they have  replaced the original male Ghostbusters….Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Sigourney Weaver , Eddie Hudson, Rick Moranis and Harold Ramis with an almost all woman cast ie…Melissa McCarthy, Kristin Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Plus adding Charles Dance and Chris Hemsworth. The sex change isn’t the important change, even though that’s’ what everyone focusses on. The big difference is iin the amount of intelligence, cleverness, and sold humor in the script. These new jokes are dumber, clumsy, obvious, shallow and just not funny. The ghosts aren’t as clever either. Only go if you need to complete your ghostly experiences. Watch for cameos by most of the originals.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS. I hear that this is a very funny TV show made into a movie. I read in various places that it’s funny…I didn’t laugh once. Two loud British “babes” go to the French Riviera and race through a lot of muck and fuss. Kate Moss (I just learned) is a beautiful and famous model and the two bimbo stars get involved with her. Just to be fair and add perspective…the young girls/women in the movie audience did laugh a lot. So if you’ve watched and liked the TV series, you’ll probably like this heavy accented film too.

Don’t let anybody go except your worst enemy.

QUOTES. “VOTING”

“Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting”,  Franklin D. Roosevelt

“The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.”  Winston S. Churchill

“Elections belong to the people. It’s their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters”, Abraham Lincoln

“Majority rule only works if you’re also considering individual rights. Because you can’t have five wolves and one sheep voting on what to have for supper”,  Larry Flynt

“If voting changed anything, they’d make it illegal”, Emma Goldman

“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron”, H.L. Mencken

DATELINE August 8, 2016

CABRILLO FESTIVAL O’ MUSIC NATIONAL PRAISE. First of all (in answer to many of our questions)…no word has been made public as to Marin Alsop’s replacement. Second of all, last  Friday and Saturday concerts almost completely packed the Civic Auditorium. Dozens of tributes of all styles were given and received by Marin, it was good fun. Right after intermission Jesse Rosen President and CEO, League of American Orchestras flew in from New York and stated…”America’s 1200 orchestras look to Cabrillo as a kind of laboratory, a cauldron of creativity; developing the finest compositional talent.   Cabrillo is regarded as a standard-bearer in fostering creativity and demonstrating a rich and authentic relationship with its community. He really said it more friendlily and profoundly than that, but I emailed him Sunday and he just sort of paraphrased it all for us especially. It amazed many audience members to hear that there are 1200 orchestras in the USA and although The NY Times, The Wall Street Journal and many, many national and international media voices have recognized The Cabrillo Festival, it was still great to hear OUR orchestra praised and respected so highly. You shoulda been there, and there are just two more concerts left…get those tickets in case you’re still wondering what the super fuss is all about.

YOU TUBE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA…WHO KNEW?
FUNNY PRESIDENT OBAMA. We’ll never get another one like him!!

HOW MORAL ARE YOU? Lee Taiz sent in this deep and timely question/test.

Subject: MORALITY

Are you as moral as you think you are?
This test only has one question, but it is a very important one. By giving an honest answer, you will discover where you stand morally. The test features an unlikely, completely fictional situation in which you will have to make a decision. Only you will know the results, so remember that your answer needs to be honest.

THE SITUATION:
You are in Florida, Miami to be specific.
There is chaos all around you caused by a hurricane with severe flooding.
This is a flood of biblical proportions.
You are a photojournalist working for a major newspaper, and you’re caught in the middle of this epic disaster.
The situation is nearly hopeless.
You’re trying to shoot career-making photos.
There are houses and people swirling around you, some disappearing under the water.
Nature is unleashing all of its destructive fury.

THE TEST:
Suddenly you see a man in the water.
He is fighting for his life, trying not to be taken down with the debris.
You move closer.
Somehow the man looks familiar.
You suddenly realize who it is.
It’s Donald Trump
At the same time you notice that the raging waters are about to take him under forever.

YOU HAVE TWO OPTIONS:
You can save the life of Donald Trump OR  you can shoot a dramatic Pulitzer Prize winning photo, documenting the death of one of the world’s most powerful Republican men hell bent on the destruction of The United States of America…

THE QUESTION:
Here’s the question, and please give an honest answer…….
“Would you select high contrast color film, or would you go with the classic simplicity of black and white?”

TRUTH AND CONSEQUENCES.

John Aird Former co-chairman of CLUE, member of Desal Alternatives and Community Water Coalition (CWC)……active citizen  went to much trouble to lay out some facts and questions in this most troubling time of political honesty. He says…

“I thought you might find the compilation (below) that I put together based on information from the politifact.org organization of interest.  They took information/statements on the respective listed individual websites and then judged each of them on its relative “truth” on a scale from “true” at the high end to at the low end, “pants on fire”- their rating step that’s worse than just being false.

What is shocking is the comparative difference on the low/false end:

Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, President Obama statements ranged from 11%-14% “false” or “pants on fire” while more than half (55%) of Trump’s statements were so rated.

I know that this difference is not entirely new “news” in general.  However, the fact that the basis of this information is from their own presumably well-reviewed and considered websites makes it especially noteworthy.

Truthfulness based on Facts:

“Mostly True” + % in Rank Order

Bernie Sanders Hillary Clinton Pres. Obama Trump
True 13 22 21 4
Mostly True 39 28 27 11
Half True 20 21 27 15
Mostly False 17 14 12 15
False 11 11 12 36
Pants On Fire 0 2 2 19
Totals:
Half True+ 72 71 75 30
Mostly False+ 28 27* 26* 70

*Apparently the totals are a reflection of rounding

WAKE UP WESTSIDE

Members of the Santa Cruz City Planning Commission showed a hint of spine at the public hearing for the 630 Water St. development last Thursday (8/4/16). Although they unanimously approved the development of 20 units to join the already constructed 53 units next to Kiva Retreat House, they balked at catering to the developer’s lament that having to provide 3 “affordable” units out of the 20 was a burden on his profit margin. For once, commissioners seemed to at least listen to the eastside residents who showed up to voice their concerns about the cumulative impacts of dense developments rising on the eastside like mushrooms after rain. Perhaps toadstools is a better simile since there is nothing palatable about this sea change to the character of Santa Cruz neighborhoods on the eastside.

PATTON’S PROGRAM. From Gary’s Two Worlds website…(dated Friday, August 5 2016)

“In an article that ran in The San Jose Mercury News on Thursday, August 4th, Michael Doyle and William Douglas of the McClatchy Washington Bureau observed that Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump is apparently laying the ground for a post-election challenge to the results of the November election (presuming he isn’t declared the winner in that election, of course):

If there’s voter fraud, this election will be illegitimate, the election winner will be illegitimate, we will have a constitutional crisis, widespread civil disobedience, and the government will be no longer the government,” Trump ally Roger Stone said last week on The Milo Yiannopolous Show. Let’s be clear; this isn’t about being a “sore loser,” as the news article suggests. For the Trump campaign to make the statement (through an intermediary, admittedly) that there will be a “constitutional crisis” and “civil disobedience” if Donald Trump doesn’t win the election in November is extraordinarily concerning.

LISA JENSEN LINKS. Lisa writes: “Why would anyone have to take a vacation from watching movies? In my case, it’s two family weddings, and the family reunions that come with them! So I’m taking a short break from the blog, Lisa Jensen Online Express (http://ljo-express.blogspot.com). But I’ll be back in time for opening night at Santa Cruz Parks & Rec Teen Theatre’s production of Alias Hook, August 19, at Louden Nelson. Maybe I’ll see you there!” Lisa has been writing film reviews and columns for Good Times since 1975.

THAT IS THE QUESTION
(THE NEWEST FILMS IN ORDER OF PERFECTION)

OUR LITTLE SISTER. 91 on Rotten Tomatoes!!! Many (including me) are calling it the Best film of 2016. Intelligent, sensitive, (Subtitled) perfect acting, the direction assumes we have brains, and a heart. Three Japanese teen age sisters living alone learn they have another sister. The sister moves in with them, and the film takes us through every emotion we’ve ever had. It’s the kind of film we get to see very seldom nowadays. No blood, violence, car chases, sex…just excellence. Please see it, it’ll re-affirm your faith in movies. (P.S. I’ll always try to say if a film is subtitled because I know it’ll turn off about 50 % of you immediately).

Don’t let anybody go except your worst enemy.

STILL PLAYING AT A THEATRE NEAR US
FROM BEST TO REALLY BAD

CAFÉ SOCIETY. Woody Allen’s newest starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Parker Posey and Steve Carell.

GHOSTBUSTERS 3. Remember that there was a sequel also with the original cast in 1989. As most movie fans know, they have  replaced the original male Ghostbusters….Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Eddie Hudson, Rick Moranis and Harold Ramis with an almost all woman cast ie…Melissa McCarthy, Kristin Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Plus adding Charles Dance and Chris Hemsworth. The sex change isn’t the important change, even though that’s what everyone focuses on. The big difference is in the amount of intelligence, cleverness, and solid humor in the script.

HUNTER S. THOMPSON & DAVE LETTERMAN 1988

DATELINE August 1. 2016

A MYSTERIOUS HAMLET. I’ve never missed a one of Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s (or Shakespeare Santa Cruz) plays in their entire history and I was even in their very first play, King Lear. I attended opening night of Hamlet last Friday 7/29. Changing Hamlet’s sex to female wasn’t anywhere near as interesting as I imagined it would be. What was “interesting”, surprising, and totally mystifying is how the audience laughed so much and so often. Right from the very first scene with Hamlet’s ghost, the place burst into fits of howls, guffaws, and continuing snickers. Those laughs continued right into what is traditionally the most serious and heartfelt confrontations in all of theatre history. I don’t mean the intentionally funny Mrs. Polonius dialogue or the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern stuff.  I’m talking about heavy scenes between Ms. Hamlet and her Mom or Hamlet and Ophelia getting solid laughter!!! Why?? I could only come up with these possibilities….

  1. The actors are playing it for laughs on purpose.
  2. The actors have little or no idea what is funny in Hamlet.
  3. It’s bad acting because it’s very rushed, and shouted due to inability to project.
  4. Three quarters of the audience has never seen Hamlet and thinks it’s a comedy.

Go see it, maybe it’s just a new way of playing Shakespeare. Their production of Macbeth last year got a bunch of laughs too…go figure.

Gillian brings us….
THE MYTH OF MILLENNIALS

In case you missed the earlier lengthy article on the topic, the Sentinel positioned a new one right on the front page of Sunday’s edition with the headline: “Why not build more granny units?” The article was a sales pitch for accessory dwelling units, (ADU’s), second homes on single family lots, with promotional quotes from planners, designers, contractors, housing specialists, housing activists and legislators. Not a sole voice from dissenting residents whom the planners dismiss as out of date, out of touch “Leave it to Beaver” caricatures. To maximize readers’ endorsement at an emotional level, the article opened with the story of a couple trying desperately to find housing for their grown daughter with disabilities, scanning the housing scene with tape measure in hand due to the supposedly draconian, complex housing codes across Bay Area communities. Since the city and county of Santa Cruz have recently completed lengthy updates to their ADU ordinances, including public meetings, commission recommendations and Council/Board of Supervisors’ votes to relax the codes to encourage more ADU’s in single family neighborhoods, one wonders why the Sentinel chose to feature and promote this issue at this time? Given the housing feeding frenzy going on at the planning department and developer levels, with ever-increasing heights and density re-defined as essential, modern and desirable, and neighborhood alarm at the impact of such density brushed off as NIMBY’ism, the Sentinel’s promotion of ADU’s suggests they have an insider’s knowledge of what may be coming our way in the near future. If so, the assumptions and statements of “fact” on which such development is based require closer examination.

TO SEE OR NOT TO SEE

THAT IS THE QUESTION
(THE NEWEST FILMS IN ORDER OF PERFECTION)

JASON BOURNE. The minute you leave the theatre this movie will seem like a dream you had.

CAFÉ SOCIETY. Woody Allen’s newest starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Parker Posey and Steve Carell. Woody narrates the film and he’s older and his voice has lost that whiney, confused, contradictory warble that we’ve grown to love so much.

STILL PLAYING AT A THEATRE NEAR US
FROM BEST TO REALLY BAD

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC. Viggo Mortensen, the lead in this family saga, has never been better, and he’s almost always excellent. The older you are the more you’ll appreciate this extension of our 1950s & 60s belief system.

(In all fairness, it’s also cute, feel – good and improbable!)

OUR KIND OF TRAITOR. Ewan McGregor and Stellan Skarsgård take the leads in this John Le Carré international money scheme thriller. It’ll remind you of James Bond and Alfred Hitchcock type chase films. Evil Russian Mafia spies, innocent British tourists, messy internal proble ms with British Government…all stuff that you’ve seen before. And it’s pretty good too.Paris, Bern, Marrakech, French Alps, and of course London  are feature attractions. If you like espionage, foreign intrigue, not much blood, and good acting– go for it.

YO-YO MA’s WONDERFUL EGO or THE MUSIC OF STRANGERS-YO YO MA AND THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE. A mess of a documentary. Not one complete piece of music in it. It rambles all over the world showing how musicians  continue selling their souls by selling out their true folk music to make a buck. Ther’s a lot of good music being written nowadays both serious and popular…this doesn’t give proper credit to either. Stay home and listen to some music you really like, you’ll be better off.

(I didn’t know Capt. James Kirk’s middle name was Tiberius and that Shatner is 85 years old and was born in Montreal).

GHOSTBUSTERS 3. Remember that there was a sequel also with the original cast in 1989. As most movie fans know, they have  replaced the original male Ghostbusters….Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Sigourney Weaver , Eddie Hudson, Rick Moranis and Harold Ramis with an almost all woman cast, i.e. Melissa McCarthy, Kristin Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Plus adding Charles Dance and Chris Hemsworth. The sex change isn’t the important change, even though that’s what everyone focuses on.

QUOTES. About SUNSET

“Soon it got dusk, a grapy dusk, a purple dusk over tangerine groves and long melon fields; the sun the color of pressed grapes, slashed with burgundy red, the fields the color of love and Spanish mysteries.”
Jack Kerouac, On the Road

“One might fancy that day, the London day, was just beginning. Like a woman who had slipped off her print dress and white apron to array herself in blue and pearls, the day changed, put off stuff, took gauze, changed to evening, and with the same sigh of exhilaration that a woman breathes, tumbling petticoats on the floor, it too shed dust, heat, colour; the traffic thinned; motor cars, tinkling, darting, succeeded the lumber of vans; and here and there among the thick foliage of the squares an intense light hung. I resign, the evening seemed to say, as it paled and faded above the battlements and prominences, moulded, pointed, of hotel, flat, and block of shops, I fade, she was beginning. I disappear, but London would have none of it, and rushed her bayonets into the sky, pinioned her, constrained her to partnership in her revelry.” Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway

“A large drop of sun lingered on the horizon and then dripped over and was gone, and the sky was brilliant over the spot where it had gone, and a torn cloud, like a bloody rag, hung over the spot of its going. And dusk crept over the sky from the eastern horizon, and darkness crept over the land from the east.” John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath

DATELINE July 25, 2016

A LITTLE BENNY HILL. We need all the humor we can get between Cleveland and Philadelphia.
JERRY LEWIS does his “Cinderfella dance”. Fun fact that you may not know: The scene was shot with one take of Jerry Lewis going down the stairs and one take going up. He ran up the stairs in less than nine seconds and collapsed at the top. He was taken to the hospital and spent four days in an oxygen tent with his second cardiac event. This delayed filming for two weeks.
FRANK SINATRA & COUNT BASIE. Just in case you forgot what “great” meant.

PROTECTING OUR NORTH COAST. (Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument). Sunday’s (7/24/16) Santa Cruz Sentinel had a great article titled, “Protections a must before monument”. Here’s what Ted Benhari from Friends of the North Coast (one of the authors) said,  and sent out on Facebook…

“Farm Bureau President David Van Lennep, Big Creek Lumber’s Bob Berlage, and I wrote an OpEd in Sunday’s Santa Cruz Sentinel about the importance of getting the conditions demanded by the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors and the Santa Cruz City Council written into any proclamation President Obama might issue creating the Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument. Without having those spelled out in the proclamation’s language, the impacts on our roads, first responders and other services will likely have to be born by local taxpayers. Just below is a link to the OpEd. If you are concerned about this, write a letter to Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and President Obama demanding these protections be included if he makes Coast Dairies a national monument, which we think is a terrible mistake because it will only attract thousands more visitors without necessarily providing any more funding (our national park system has $12 billion dollars of unmet maintenance needs, a figure which grows larger every year).

TRUMP, GEORGE F. WILL AND DAVID BROOKS!!! Sunday’s Santa Cruz Sentinel (July 24, 2016) should be preserved in some very special place. Not only did we find the above article on saving our North Coast, and Chris Krohn’s piece on the Republican Convention and how that party may be over but we find absolutely shocking revelations from staunch conservative and Pulitzer prize winner George F. Will. He calls Trump “a boastful adulterer and aspiring torturer”. He says Mike Pence’s unctuous affect resemble’s Uriah Heep’s”. It’s important…you should read Will’s entire editorial here…

GEORGE.F. WILL “Another view – Pence the pliable’s contortions”.

DAVID BROOKS, “The Dark Knight of disorder promises law and order”  David Brooks another noted conservative and commentator for the Washington Post called Trump “The Dark Knight”. He says in this article, But if Trump is detached from the country, and uninterested in anything but himself, he’s also detached from his party. Trump is not really changing his party as much as dissolving it. He also states…” This is less a party than a personality cult. Law and order is a strange theme for a candidate who radiates conflict and disorder. Some rich children are careless that way; they break things and other people have to clean up the mess”. Go here and read it all… When you have two of the most prominent Republicans in the nation saying that about the party candidate and the party…you know times are changing.

COMMUNITY  POWER AND OUSTING PG&E. ( a repeat) More than just closing Diablo there’s 1000’s of folks working hard to create “Community Power”. Counties and cities such as

Marin County, San Mateo, Sonoma, San Francisco, Benecia, El Cerrito, Richmond,  San Pablo all have bought in to community power and Lafayette and Walnut Creek join that group in September. Check out this link to see what Monterey Bay Community Power has already accomplished. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gY6AkwdIuY . Then read the Santa Cruz Sentinel’s angled and typically cautious piece about this October and Community Power plans for our neighboring Counties. http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/article/NE/20160609/NEWS/160609741

COMMUNITY POWER MEETING… Beverly DesChaux, President of the Electric Auto Assn Central Coast Chapter sent this notice…
Hi Environmentally Concerned Citizens,

The Electric Auto Association,  Central Coast Chapter is very excited to co-sponsor this presentation on our Monterey Bay Community Power, Wednesday, August 3rd, 6-7:30 pm at Santa Cruz High Auditorium. This presentation will include results of the technical study. It will help you to understand what a Community Choice Energy(CCE) program means with all of its many benefits to our community and the environment, including facts and figures about costs and Greenhouse Gas Emissions reductions into the future. This information will prepare you to choose whether to buy your electricity from our locally controlled CCE or opt out to stay with PG&E. As we green up the grid, this is great news for EV owners/drivers who are not already plugging into their own solar arrays. This presentation will be co-sponsored with Allterra Solar, and Santa Cruz City Schools’ Green Schools Committee, targeting environmental groups and other interested members of the community. That’s Weds., Aug. 3
6-7:30 p.m. Santa Cruz High Auditorium. We hope you will join us for this official presentation by the outreach firm for Monterey Bay Community Power. The aim is to begin providing electricity to customers by October 2017, so please invite concerned groups and people so they can be informed about their upcoming choice.

Mr. Paul Elerick of Aptos writes…
THAT APPLE BARN IN APTOS

No, this isn’t a storage place for Apple Computer products.  It’s the former Village Fair Antique shop housed in an old apple shed that no longer exists. We get updates in the local Aptos newspapers as to what going on. Never what’s not going on.  Ever since last year Barry Swenson Builder (BSB) has given completion dates for moving the barn about 300 feet to become a grocery store and the “Town Center”. It’s almost August and the barn hasn’t moved .  The apple barn when moved will become a focal point for BSB’s Aptos Village Project with 67 residential homes, retail shops and whatever.  Maybe even a small park on a hillside that was once in their plan.

I hope out county government takes all this into consideration when they start to sell us their Corridors Plan, of which Aptos Village Project is apparently one of them.  I believe BSB’s project in Aptos will have set records for elapsed time between approval and completion.  I believe this is year 13 for Aptos Village.

Please, please… neighbors on the East Side of Santa Cruz,  don’t let BSB or any other development company get started on that wonderful portion of Soquel Ave between Ocean St. and the freeway.  It’s just fine the way it is, and so are the neighborhoods that are located nearby.  Don’t give us county people another reason not to come into Santa Cruz’.

Gillian sends…
DEVELOPERS’ EXPRESS

At the Planning Commission meeting on the Downtown (Recovery) Plan, (7/21/16) supporters, namely developers, property owners and the Downtown Business Association and opponents, members of the public with concerns, attended in equal numbers… five on each side. It is hard to fathom why such a radical departure from the vision of the original Downtown Recovery Plan has attracted little response from the community. The reasons are probably many: so much new development bearing down on us like a freight train it feels overwhelming; eastside neighborhoods under siege leaving little time to worry about downtown; the pervasive, misguided philosophy of “growth is inevitable” and most concerning, that few locals care enough about downtown to speak out.

And then there’s that old problem of misinformation masquerading as truth put forward by the Planning Department.

CHRIS KROHN’S EXCLUSIVE REPORT TO BRATTONONLINE…from Philadelphia.

INSIDE THE RNC   Chris Krohn is a fromer Santa Cruz mayor.

“Much of Cleveland this week is surreal, maybe post-surreal”.

Surreal, Take One—Police and More Police

There are police there from 21 different states—Louisville, Austin, Charleston, all represented, and so are the Florida, Indiana, and New Jersey state police to name just a few. But perhaps the most bizarre security presence I witnessed, more unusual than Secret Service, Homeland Security Intelligence (HSI, who know?), “Terrorism Task Force,” and the National Guard was the presence of our own CHP. That’s right, the California Highway Patrol had at least seven officers patrolling downtown Cleveland during the convention. The mayor, Frank Jackson told me in an interview that the city’s received $50 million to help pay for the convention, so I guess it’s got to go somewhere.

PATTON’S PROGRAM. From Gary’s Two Worlds website…Gary’s in Philadelphia.

DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION COMMENTARY #1.

Today, Monday, is the start of the Convention, and today is the last time for delegates to check in. Most did yesterday, I among them, and those who showed up got lots of convention-related buttons, water bottles, toys, snacks, and the like. Delegates receive their official credentials to get into the Wells Fargo Center on a daily basis, and Monday morning is the first day that official credentials are being handed out. Since I am an “alternate” delegate for Bernie Sanders, I may get an upgrade if a Bernie delegate doesn’t show up.

As I indicated yesterday, I am using my Two Worlds blog, this week, to give readers a personal report, perhaps providing news or information that the major media isn’t covering. In terms of what happened on Sunday, the Democratic Party is all about the “Party” thing.

THE TROUBLE WITH SHAKESPEARE. Just watching the trailers for the repeats of Shakespeare plays at the National Theatre Live’s Hamlet, our local Hamlet and Midsummer Night’s and the vast majority of any modern Shakespeare productions around the world …whole generations are growing up with no chance to see Shakespeare’s plays uncut and the way he wrote and staged them. Isn’t it like putting the Mona Lisa in a Nike tee-shirt so the younger generation will appreciate her more??

HIP BOOK SIGNING. Ralph Abraham and the Hip Santa Cruz History Project invite you to a launch event for their new book,  “Hip Santa Cruz” just published on June 17, 2016. It’ll be at the R. THE LEGEND OF TARZAN. Tarzan has left the jungle but politics and Christoph Waltz have begun enslaving Congo locals so Tarzan ( Alexander Skarsgard) returns back to the vines. He brings Samuel L.  Jackson who plays a more intelligent black version of Gabby Hayes, and does it poorly. The joy of the jungle, Brenda Joyce, Maureen O’Sullivan , Cheetah and Boy are gone. Just war, blood, violence remain. It’s sad to see a tradition like Johnny Weissmuller’s Tarzan squeezed through this absolutley senseless waste.

SWISS ARMY MAN. This is easily the most bizarre film I’ve seen in ten years. Paul Dano almost always plays in odd, nearly insane movies and he’s just as nuts in this one. Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) plays a dead corpse who farts so hard that Dano uses him as a jet ski!!!

It isn’t funny, or even odd enough with any class or coherence to make it worth seeing. It’s listed as a comedy, no one was laughing when I saw it.
